BETHESDA

As we delved into discussions with our clients about an exciting new project just beyond Washington D.C., she dropped in a seemingly minor remark that would shape the entire design of the residence: "I have a thing for blue." This set the tone for crafting a home that exuded a blend of cool, laid-back sophistication, with just the right amount of blue to satisfy our discerning client.

Our initial hurdle was to collaborate with the builder and architect to transform a maze of small rooms into an open, adaptable layout that suited the family's lifestyle. Additionally, the home needed to double as an informal entertainment space for both business associates and friends.

Once the interior walls came down, we were greeted by expansive, inviting spaces that were ideal for both living and hosting gatherings. Architectural elements were then thoughtfully employed to delineate areas, add visual interest, and define functionality. While subtle grays and pearl tones formed the foundation of the palette, hints of blue were strategically incorporated throughout the residence. These blues spanned the spectrum, from serene steel blue to regal royal blue to vibrant azure, evoking the ever-changing hues of the sky. This fluidity not only imbued a sense of tranquility but also kept the spaces visually captivating as one transitioned from room to room.

An additional visual treat came in the form of the eclectic art collection amassed by the clients over the years. Ranging from classic black and sepia photographs to bold, contemporary abstract pieces, the artwork added layers of personality and charm to the home. And to top it all off, the custom chandelier suspended from the dining room ceiling, resembling delicate raindrops, served as the perfect finishing touch, occasionally casting a subtle hint of blue, like a cherry atop a flawless cake.
